Hiring Procedures

  • Fire Department Interest Card: When not accepting actual applications for employment, interested persons may complete a Job Interest Card.
  • City Applications: Interested person should complete an online application for employment. Copies of certifications should be submitted with the online application in PDF (portable document format) version.
  • Eligibility List: Candidates successfully moving beyond the submission of an online application, eligibility verification and verification of CPAT and FireTeam test scores will be placed on an eligibility list for consideration in hiring. Applicants will be notified via email of their eligibility.
  • Integrity Inventory: Applicants who are placed on eligibility list will be invited to complete an Integrity Inventory. The Integrity Inventory (I2) is a national entry-level selection tool specifically developed for the public safety sector. The I2 predicts individuals' likelihood of engaging in counterproductive workplace behaviors including, but not limited to, theft, violence and drug abuse.
  • Applicant Interview: Applicants are scheduled for a structured interview before a panel comprised of members from the Training Division, Leadership Team and Human Resources.
  • Fire Chief Selection: The Fire Chief will make preliminary selections for the remainder of the process for the number of positions needing filled.
  • Conditional Offer of Employment: A conditional job offer will be extended to the selected candidates by the City of Hutchinson, Kansas Human Resources Department. The conditional job offer is contingent upon the candidate successfully completing the criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, vision requirement and physical exam.
  • Background Check and Pre-employment Screening: Candidates will be required to approve and pass a criminal background and driver's license check.
  • Drug Test Screening: Within 24 hours of the conditional offer of employment, a drug-screening test must be conducted and provide negative results.
  • Physical Examination: A medical screening in accordance with NFPA 1001 must result in the department physician's signature of compliance with applicable NFPA standards.
  • Probation Status: Candidates selected for hire are on probationary status for a period of 1 year from date of employment.
