Born in 1840, the son of Giles Brown and Harriet Harrison Briscoe, he married Almira Raff, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Frease) Raff.  

Their daughter, Catherine Brown 1873-1957 married Arthur Severance, local lumber dealer.

Their son John Briscoe Brown Jr. 1884-1955
