CALL FOR ARTISTS - Fun Valley Sports Complex

The City of Hutchinson is requesting submissions for Art to be purchased and permanently
installed at Fun Valley Sports Complex 4401 W 4th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67501. This is Hutchinson’s Baseball/Softball Complex. This facility is used by residents of Hutchinson regularly for team leagues and games, but this facility is also widely used by traveling teams that are visiting Hutchinson for tournaments. The City of Hutchinson has a 1% for Public Art ordinance which sets aside funding during certain projects for public art. The recent Fun Valley Bleacher Project which was completed 3/11/20 qualifies for this ordinance. The budget for this Public Art Project and parameters for submission is a total of $7,500.

The Public Art Design Council has voted a five-member selection committee for this 1% project. This group will review submissions and make the final decision. The selected artist will sign a binding contract that outlines responsibilities, payments and deadlines. The selection committee has developed some conditions to which all submissions are encouraged to follow:
  • Softball/baseball themed
  • Sculpture, formed representational object, realistic piece, over-sized
  • Object for picture opportunities
  • Ground level presentation
  • Minimum height of 3 feet
  • Illumination or lighting at night
  • Meant to be interacted with/touchable
  • Preference for bright/colorful, community identifiers
  • Prefer durable materials, weathering and age
*City of Hutchinson Staff will provide concrete base or footing necessary for Art, conduits, and
lighting fixtures.

*Include portfolio with already existing work, so we know capabilities of working with size requirements and materials.

Budgeted amount ($7,500) will include artist stipend, delivery of artwork and any additional
installation costs. Submissions are to include renderings or sketches of potential piece, materials list and other pertinent information. If artwork is already existing, then complete images of art from multiple viewpoints is required.

Important Dates:
Entries close: Friday October 30th, 2020
Notification of Selection: Friday November 13th, 2020
Delivery of Artwork/Installation no later than: Friday November 29th, 2021
